Override Failure Costs Marshfield Schools 75 Jobs
School Committee · Meeting of September 15, 2026
Marshfield schools report losing 75 staff positions after town override fails. School Committee Chairman Costello told members Tuesday the outcome reflects "an affordability issue in Marshfield, in Massachusetts, and in the United States right now," not a rejection of the schools. Business Manager Miller and Superintendent Dr.
Sullivan confirmed 54 or 55 layoffs plus 20 unfilled positions, for a net loss of 75 jobs year over year. The fiscal 2027 budget stands at $57.8 million, down from $60.4 million in fiscal 2026, closed out last week with zero circuit-breaker funds carried forward. The override failed on roughly 40 percent voter turnout in a close election.
The committee also unanimously accepted a $10,000 Sala Foundation gift to the McKinney-Vento program and a $1,250 Service Master donation, and cleared Marshfield High School's DECA trip to Anaheim, California, for its April national conference.
