Marshfield School Committee Weighs More Than $6 Million in Tiered Budget Cuts

MARSHFIELD — April 14, 2026 — Marshfield School Committee presents three-tiered list of cuts exceeding $6 million as town deficit forces schools to absorb more than $4 million in reductions. Superintendent Dr. Sullivan and his full principal and administrative team walked the committee through every proposed cut at a three-hour budget workshop Tuesday, providing rationale and impact assessments for eliminations ranging from a $98,000 elementary health teacher to a potential elementary school closure estimated to save $700,000. The School Committee chair pushed back sharply against community accusations that the list is a political scare tactic: "Every single thing you will see on this screen today is a consequence of poor decisions at the town level. They are not a consequence of poor management of schools." Tier 1 cuts alone reach approximately $2.4 million and would intersect with a Budget B override scenario placing $4 million before voters; Tier 3 — which includes closing one of five elementary schools and dismantling the eighth-grade cluster model at Furnace Brook Middle School — would only be necessary if no additional revenue is found. Athletic Director Paul Babson told the committee that 41 percent of the high school student body currently participates in spring sports and that the proposed elimination of the assistant athletic director would leave a single administrator overseeing 124 coaches and a facility open until 10:30 p.m.
