Marshfield's School Committee Policy Subcommittee voted to forward three updated policies, covering physical restraint, civil law enforcement interactions, and school visitors, to the full committee.
School Committee · Meeting of October 20, 2026
Marshfield's School Committee Policy Subcommittee voted to forward three updated policies, covering physical restraint, civil law enforcement interactions, and school visitors, to the full committee. A staff presenter identified only as Amy said the restraint and timeout policy revisions, required by new state regulation, narrow the district's seclusion ban to allow it only "as a last resort" under strict conditions. A second participant, who said they work for the Massachusetts Association of School Committees and helped write its model policies, pushed back on embedding detailed procedure inside policy language, warning it "sets a precedent" for future committees.
The subcommittee also adopted a PROTECT Act policy affirming students have "a right to a free public education regardless of race, public sex, gender identity, religion, national origin, immigration or citizenship status, disability or sexual orientation," and identified a decade-old gap in the district's policy manual on school visitors. All three recommendations passed by unanimous voice vote.
