Marshfield School Committee adopts new curriculum opt-out language

Marshfield schools warn of a $2.46 million gap heading into fiscal 2027. Assistant Superintendent Sean Miller told the School Committee the town's projected revenue is rising just $1.86 million while fixed costs climb $4.3 million, leaving an initial level-service school budget of $63,597,203 — a 5.57 percent increase — with no matching town number yet. Miller said the district has left nearly 20 positions unfilled over two years to save about $1.6 million, and per-pupil spending of $18,324 still trails the $21,885 state average.

The committee also voted 3-0 to add handbook language, prompted by a U.S. Supreme Court ruling, letting families request religious opt-outs from mandated LGBTQ-inclusive curriculum, while pressing administrators to bring back a formal review procedure. "We are required to put the language in the handbook because of the Supreme Court decision," said Assistant Superintendent Martin.
